Czech Group Launches Flying Bike

Bicycle flies successfully with remotely controlled flight system.

If you think riding a bicycle is too much physical work, a group of Czech inventors may have a solution. The group recently test flew what is currently a remote-controlled all-electric flying bike inside an exhibit hall in Prague. At this stage, the bike is strictly a proof-of-concept and “the fulfillment of our boyish dream,” one of the participants of the project reported to a Czech news outlet.

The flying bike weighs a little over 200 pounds and is reportedly elevated by six battery-powered rotors. A pole on each side of the bike prevents it from tipping over during takeoffs and landings. A dummy was mounted on top of the bike for the test flight, but “we want to continue until a human being is capable of sitting on it,” said Milan Duchek, one of the designers and engineers involved with the project. Duchek hopes this will be achieved as early as this fall.

And while the test flight shows that the aircraft is controllable around all three axes of flight, it appears that much work needs to be done before the flying bike will be stable enough to fly safely. Watch the flying bike in action here.
