Virgin America Pilot Spots UAV Near Love Field

Quadracopter was flying close to Dallas airport.

The pilot of a Virgin America Airbus A319 reported seeing a quadracopter climbing above his altitude Tuesday night while on approach to Dallas Love Field.

Love Field tower controllers notified Dallas police that a pilot on Virgin America Flight 769 from New York LaGuardia to Dallas reported encountering the unmanned aerial vehicle as the jetliner descended through 400 feet. The pilot said he saw red and green lights on the quadracopter about a mile and half from the airport and watched it climb through his altitude to an estimated height of 600 feet, according to the FAA.

Dallas police dispatched their Air One helicopter to search for the drone but the UAV operator was never located.

The Virgin America flight landed safely at around 9:30 p.m.
