Yves “Jetman” Rossy, the daredevil who has gained fame with his turbine-powered jet-pack, completed another bold feat last week when he flew in formation with two L-39C Albatros jets from the Breitling Jet Team.
Rossy met up with the jets over the Swiss Alps after jumping from a helicopter with his jet-propelled wing strapped to his back. In order to achieve the coordinated flight, Rossy operated the jet-pack at full throttle while the Breitling jets slowed to a speed of 137 miles per hour.
The flight marks the most recent in Rossy’s string of daring flights with his jet-propelled wing, which spans a width of about six feet and is powered by four Jet-Cat P200 engines. In addition to crossing the English Channel, Rossy recently used his craft to fly across the Grand Canyon and to form up alongside two Stearman biplanes carrying Breitling wingwalkers.
Rossy first achieved vertical flight with the jet-pack in 2006, during which he remained in the air for a little under six minutes. According to Rossy, the wing is his attempt to fly with good maneuverability but without the constraints of conventional aircraft.
