Sully to Fly Vintage DC-7 for Benefit Flight

Famous captain will return to Charlotte in N836D.

Famed US Airways captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is in the spotlight once again as he prepares to return to the controls and head to Charlotte, North Carolina, this time in a vintage DC-7B.

The Miracle on the Hudson captain and copilot Jeff Skiles will each take turns at the helm of the restored airliner next Friday as it makes its way from Miami for a flight benefiting the Historical Flight Foundation, the organization behind the restoration process.

The DC-7 (N836D) was delivered to Eastern Airlines in 1958 and retired from the airline less than 10 years later. After changing hands a time or two, it sat on the tarmac for more than three decades at St. Paul Airport, until a few inspired men undertook the monumental task of bringing the airplane back to life.

Since regaining its wings, the DC-7 has traveled across the country, including to Oshkosh, where it piqued Sullenberger’s interest. Having never flown a DC-7 before, Sullenberger agreed to participate in the upcoming benefit flight, and will be undergoing a weeklong orientation course with Jeff Skiles starting on Monday in order to prepare for the event.

Besides the upcoming benefit flight, N836D has been receiving additional attention as of late due to its appearance in the first episode of the new series “Pan Am,” which showcased the airplane with temporary Pan American World Airways markings.
