Red Bull Air Race Heads to Fort Worth

Some of the world's best aerobatic pilots gather in Texas.

A group of top-notch aerobatic pilots are gathered at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, getting ready to put on one of the most exciting aviation events in the world — the Red Bull Air Race — set for September 6 and 7. This year, in a first for the U.S., the pilots will take off right from the center of the infield of the NASCAR track.

The pilots will compete by flying a twisting course marked by massive inflatable cones, adding aerobatic moves in between. Two classes are featured in the two-day event: the Challenger Class, including rookie Red Bull racers, and the Master Class, consisting of highly seasoned competitors. Training runs for both classes will take place on Saturday and, toward the end of the day, the Challenger Cup competition will conclude. Sunday’s races are all Masters.

After five of eight races in various locations around the world, Austrian Hannes Arch leads the Masters Class. But it is still anyone’s race as Arch leads ahead of Paul Bonhomme from the U.K by only two points.

In addition to the races, there will be other aviators performing their mind-blowing routines, including the Red Bull Skydivers; Chuck Aaron, flying his aerobatic helicopter routine; and David Martin, twisting up the skies in his bright yellow Breitling-branded CAP 232.

The Fort Worth event is the first Red Bull Air Race for the year in the U.S. The doors at the Texas Motor Speedway will open at 9 a.m. and the races begin just after noon. If you can’t make it to the event, you can watch it live here. You also have a chance to check out the second U.S. Red Bull event set to take place October 11 and 12 in Las Vegas.
