Part 23 Revitalization Rewrite Gets Committee Approval

Regulation changes move one step closer to reality.

Legislation that would introduce revolutionary changes to Part 23, which regulates light aircraft certification and manufacturing, earned Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approval on Wednesday, paving the way for the rules to be approved by the full House.

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS) introduced the bill, H.R. 1848, which is sponsored by 31 bipartisan lawmakers. It would require the FAA to implement the Part 23 Reorganization Aviation Rulemaking Committee recommendations by the end of 2015. The goal of the rewrite is to double safety while halving manufacturers’ certification costs for building light general aviation aircraft. A companion Senate bill is also in the works.
