New Aviation College Comes to Utah

Program consolidates courses and departments from other schools.

Utah Valley University in Orem has pulled together several programs and departments from among its colleges to create the new College of Aviation and Public Services. Besides aviation degrees, students can earn degrees in fire science, emergency services, forensics and criminal justice – but the focus is on careers in aviation.

UVU president Matthew Holland said, “We see such potential with our aviation and public services programs. This is a growing field and it speaks to our mission of keeping the applied and practical.”

The dean of the new college is Wayne Dorman, who comes to Utah from Middle Tennessee State University. He said, “My goal is t make this a first choice among [aviation] students in Utah and across the U.S.”

The program hopes to establish a partnership with United Airlines. Future programs could include an air traffic control curriculum, or even a joint program between aviation and fire science, according to the university’s vice president of academic affairs Ian Wilson.
