At Kuala Lumpur Airport, where missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 departed, authorities are investigating a new mystery — three Boeing 747-200Fs abandoned on the tarmac.
An unusual advertisement appeared in two Malaysia newspapers yesterday, showing the three jumbo jets that were apparently discarded.
It said, “If you fail to collect the aircraft within 14 days of the date of this notice, we reserve the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the aircraft.”
The jumbo jets — TF-ARN, TF-ARH and TF-ARM — are listed in several aviation databases as belonging to Air Atlanta Icelandic, but the company says it sold them in 2008 and they’ve apparently changed hands since then.
In a statement, Malaysia Airports said the ad would serve as a notice that the Boeings may be sold in order to pay off the debts accrued by the owner. If no owner comes forward, Malaysia Airports says it’s entitled to sell the jets under the country’s Civil Aviation Act of 1969.
“The giving of such notice by way of advertisement is a common and reasonable step in the process of debt recovery especially in cases where the company concerned has ceased operations and is a foreign entity whereby exhaustive steps undertaken to find a contact person have not been successful.”
