Apple’s App Store has just released Bendix/King’s new aviation navigator app, myWingMan. The app is very intuitive and has some interesting features that pilots will likely love.
The app allows for up to one, two or three split screens to be displayed at one time, and by tapping one of the split-screens with two fingertips, you can virtually pick up and move the information from window to window. In the bottom right corner of the screen is what Bendix/King calls a function wheel, which acts as the controller for the main screen. Touching the function wheel enlarges it to make it easy to select the desired function.
Besides charts and airport information some functions include weather, fuel prices, synthetic vision and a g-meter.
You can also select from different flight modes that optimize the screen setup for each phase of flight, from the preflight to the approach. For the cruise phase, you can select either IFR or VFR and there is also an option to personalize your own setup.
In the pre-flight page, you can quickly set up a flight plan by entering the departure point and destination. The app then lets you choose whether you want to fly direct, via Victor Airways or via Jet Airways and the app automatically enters the route. And once you’ve selected the route, as with most aviation apps, you can file your flight plan directly from the app.
A subscription for myWingMan costs $99 for VFR and $149 for IFR.
