Garmin Expands Glass Panel Retrofit Availability

Metroliner and Twin Otter get STCs for G950.

Garmin has achieved supplemental type certificate (STC) approval for two additional airplane models for its G950 integrated avionics flight deck, the retrofit version of the very successful G1000 avionics suite, making the glass panel available for the Metroliner and de Havilland Twin Otter.

Both of the new STC installations feature a 15-inch MFD in the center of the instrument panel. The Metroliner’s MFD is flanked by two 12-inch PFDs while the Twin Otter’s PFDs are 10 inches.

The G950 system provides all of the features packaged in the G1000 system, including ADS-B out capability, real-time weather and traffic, TAWS, WAAS/LPV approach capability, charts and more. Synthetic vision is also available as an option; however, the G950 retrofit does not include the GFC 700 autopilot. Instead the system can be integrated with autopilots already installed in the airplane.

In addition to bringing new technology into the cockpit, Garmin says the G950 retrofit provides a more reliable system with greater dispatch reliability, and the installation could also result in a reduction in the empty weight by as much as 250 pounds.

With these latest STC additions, the G950 is available for retrofit in six different types of airplanes. The other four platforms include the Cessna Citation 501, Piper Meridian, Beechcraft 1900D and Twin Commander. G950 retrofits include two or three flat-panel LCD screens, ranging in size from 10 to 12 inches for the PFD and up to 15 inches for the MFD screen. The installation can be done at several Garmin approved avionics shops around the country. Pricing varies depending on the selected configuration.
