Sporty’s has released a new and completely revamped version of its E6B app for the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, including the iPhone 5. The new version includes the same features as the electronic E6B that is available from Sporty’s Pilot Shop. The app includes 22 aviation functions, conversions for 10 different parameters and some timer functions. The timer shows Zulu time as well as two additional time zones that can quickly be configured in the E6B’s settings.
There are several functions that help you with preflight planning, such as calculations for groundspeed, heading and fuel required based on the expected wind conditions for the flight. Other helpful features, such as actual true airspeed, top of descent, required rate of descent and other inflight calculations are also available. Weather related functions allow you to calculate cloud bases, pressure and density altitudes, and crosswind components.
Useful conversions include temperature, distance, weight and volume conversions.
Probably the most useful function of all is the new weight and balance feature, which allows you to save data from multiple airplanes. You only need to enter the basic information such as the empty weight and the arms for each station into the fields once. The app also saves the data entered for each field so you only need to change the fields that need to be modified for each flight.
