Avidyne Now Connects to ForeFlight

Panel-mounted IFD540 and IFD440 interface with mobile app.

Avidyne announced it has partnered with ForeFlight to enable wireless connections between the mobile aviation app and Avidyne’s panel-mounted IFD540 and IFD440 FMS/GPS/navcom systems, which were designed to replace Garmin’s popular GNS530 and 430.

The initial version will allow ForeFlight v. 7.6 users to wirelessly interface to receive GPS position and flight plan information from Avidyne’s 540/440 units with the 10.1 software version. But Avidyne users can soon look forward to several additional capabilities through this new connectivity capability.

“ForeFlight has taken advantage of Avidyne’s open-architecture wireless interface, opening up many possibilities for transferring and displaying of data in the cockpit including mapping, flight planning and display of ADS-B weather and traffic as we move forward,” said Dan Schwinn, Avidyne’s president and CEO. “We have made available a Wireless Connectivity Software Developer Kit and we are in talks with many other app developers, and you can expect more announcements for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi enablements and services for the IFD540/440 will be forthcoming.”

The IFD540 and IFD440 also connect wirelessly to a remote-control keyboard, Avidyne’s MK10 unit, which makes data entry for the panel mounted units quicker and easier.
