Key Takeaways:

  • Wisk Aero has initiated construction of one of the nation's first public airport vertiports at Hollister Municipal Airport to test autonomous and eVTOL aircraft operations.
  • The vertiport will serve as a dedicated testbed for Wisk's Generation 6 autonomous aircraft, focusing on precision landing technologies and operations under various conditions, including reduced visibility and GPS-denied environments.
  • The data and operational learnings gathered from this testing are intended to help shape future FAA standards and regulations for vertiport design and operations, particularly for autonomous aircraft.
  • Wisk aims to develop a "relocatable template" for vertiport infrastructure, contributing to the FAA's shift from prescriptive to performance-based guidance for advanced air mobility.

Hollister Municipal Airport (KCVH) in California could be among the first in the nation to receive a vertiport for autonomous and eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft.

Autonomous air taxi developer Wisk Aero, which Boeing earlier this month agreed to sell to eVTOL manufacturer Archer Aviation, said Wednesday that it broke ground on the vertiport at Hollister, where the company already conducts flight testing. Wisk said the new 100-feet-by-100-feet site will be a “dedicated testbed” for both piloted and unpiloted operations, becoming “one of the first public airport vertiports” designed for that purpose.
