You're being very 1970s-Flying-Magazine (ask me how I know...) about this, since the national media have all pretty much led with the fact that they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Not relevant? Debatable. Newsworthy? Yes.
Bob Odegaard Killed in Crash of Super Corsair
from Stephan Wilkinson

This airplane was originally sold by Walter Soplata with the proviso that it never be flown. Admittedly it was just a hulk, but he sold it to a quasi-museum--somewhere in Ohio, I think--that planned to restore it completely but indeed did promise to never fly it. When the "museum" failed and in turn sold it to Odegaard, apparently all bets were off. So now it's flown, it's gone, and only one Goodyear FG-1D Corsair remains. (Incidentally, they were never named Super Corsairs. That's a popular fiction.) That one will continue to fly until it too inevitably crashes. Does anyone care?

"Are you practicing for The Onion?"
Please. The Onion at least is funny. This is a nasty piece of sarcasm directed, as is so much of this crap, at an organization that is at least trying to accomplish something. Those that can, do. Those that can't, make fun of them.
I've read so much of this whingeing on various aviation forums, and all of it reveals near-hysterical jealousy that Ric Gillespie and TIGHAR have support from a wide variety of people and organizations that believe in what they're doing. Not necessarily believing that their theory is absolutely correct, but believing that their work is admirable. I've written articles in both Air & Space and Aviation History taking issue with some of TIGHAR's theories, but that doesn't mean I don't support them, and it doesn't mean I'd ever make fun of them from my couch in Austin, Texas.

this had nothing to do with the extended gear. it was obviously a spot-landing contest, as you can see from the traffic cones. spot-landing contests are routine every nice weekend among bush pilots (and, in this case, perhaps wannabe bush pilots). he simply braked too hard.
