FLY & DINE: Shelter Cove, California (K0Q5)

Shelter Cove is a great destination and a nice weekend getaway. Not a lot to do there other than golfing or some limited hiking and beach exploring, so bring a book! It's a lot easier to get to by plane than by car.
Be sure to keep a CLOSE eye on the weather, the fog can roll in very quickly, and can stick around for days. VFR pilots have been stuck there for extended periods when the weather changed unexpectedly.
FAA Launches PED Safety Study

I have seen firsthand that a cell phone can affect the accuracy of radio navigation equipment. Yes, there are backups and redundancy on air carrier flights, and it's unlikely that PEDs would bring down such a flight. But why risk it, by potentially removing one layer of safety and redundancy? I can easily imagine PEDs in use by passengers being part of a chain of events resulting in tragedy. I can also imagine a coordinated attack by terrorists, perhaps each with a modified cell phone designed to intentionally interfere with navigation signals during crucial periods of flight. (Of course, people with this sort of intention are unlikely to be dissuaded by an announcement asking them to turn off their PEDs.)
Prayer, on the other hand, does not have any ability to bring down a plane, the suggestion above is a bit silly.
Finally, Free Datalink Weather For All

I almost passed this story by; glad I didn't. This is great news, and (sorry, XM) it has me considering the purchase of the Sporty's device and the cancellation of the roughly $50/month XM service I pay for on my Garmin handheld. I'd miss the XM radio in flight, but could replace that with music from the iPad. I'd be dollars ahead after 15 months or so.
AOPA Comes Under the Gun

TO be honest, I've felt like AOPA changed, dramatically and for the worse, after Phil Boyer retired and was replaced by Craig Fuller. Almost overnight, AOPA's mission seemed to change to, "how much more money can we extract from our members?" Some of it was blatant, like the dues increase. Some more subtle, like the elimination of most of the (formerly) free assistance with medical issues, replaced by the (extra charge) medical services plan. Some of it was just silly (join the AOPA Wine Club and buy mediocre wines for twice what they're worth!)
Have you looked at their financials? They are a top-heavy organization with a bunch of VPs and Senior VPs making mid-six figure salaries. Nice work if you can get it. Is all that really necessary?
I feel like AOPA has lost its way and forgotten its core mission – and its core member. For the past three years, I've contemplated canceling every time my membership came up for renewal, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Maybe the next time I will.
All OK after Flying Editor's Cirrus SR22 in Midair

I agree with the above comment. Since this was not the oft-feared scenario where a high-wing plane climbs into a low-wing plane (or a low-wing descends into a high-wing) but seemingly the opposite, it would seem like there should have been the opportunity for one or both pilots to see and avoid.
One can imagine a scenario with a complacent Cirrus pilot (relying on autopilot and anti-collision hardware) and a distracted CFI (giving instruction in the 152) could both have failed to look out the window. I don't know if that's what happened here, but at first read it appears this accident might have been avoided. In any case, I'm grateful that the only big losers here are insurance companies and not loved ones.
