Homeland Security Helo Pilot on Trial

Peters is NOT being charged with murder or manslaughter or even reckless conduct leading to the death of the rafter. He is accused of lying to authorities ABOUT his intentions that day. He probably was a young (2005 makes him 34) frustrated officer who meant no actual harm to the decedent but then lied when confronted with the video of him rotor washing the guy into the river. Others came forward to state that he intended to use this unauthorized method of deterring any water crossers, and knowing his job was on the line if he admitted to the same, lied to investigators. That's what this case is about - not the death of the drowned illegal but the lying of a federal employee about his role in the same.
PiperJet Is Born Again

This is a business decision from a company that remains economically fragile and truth be told, this jet project was a pipe dream from the start. Plans were made for an "extended line" of bigger business jets, according to Berger. Unfortunately, our "Private Jet" killing president has made the acquisition of a VLJ by a small company a red badge of excessive spending and most companies (like mine) will stick with a turbo prop or a Cirrus. And if the bean counters downstairs convince a BOD that a VLJ would make economic sense, why a new design? I flew in a friend's Embraer Phenom 100 and it, as well as the Cessna Mustang are proven aircraft and blow away anything on the drawing board of Cirrus, Piper, Diamond, Honda, Eclipse or Adam Aircraft (How long will Eclipse be back from oblivion with cash infusions of capital absent a market or direction)? Hint - two years tops. There. are simply not enough customers for each of these companies (some great, some...not so great) to get a realistic ROI at the price points promised. Funny thing is Obama now has a hand (not the main reason - just a hand) in the demise of TWO Altaire projects the other spelled Altair (the LSAM - lunar module) of the NASA Constellation Moon program cancelled in February of 2010. Hey, Piper historically used Indian names for new project airplanes. This one should been named after the famous lost tribe of Vero Beach - the "Fugawi." Legend has it that the label was incorrectly applied. You see, when asked what their tribal name was after being found wandering in the swamps of Florida, Chief Berger replied, "Where the fugawi?" Good luck chief. I own an SR22 and a beautiful Piper Cub. Is there any money left selling small prop planes? If so, then my humble advice is to "dance with her who brung ya to the dance."
Another Cirrus Chute Deployment Mystery

My 2004 SR22 was destroyed in the June 1, 2011 tornado that hit Southbridge Massachusetts - along with my hangar. The cockpit was smashed downward by the force of one of the hangar supporting I beams, putting downward force on the rocket cable. I beg to differ about chute deployments and saving lives. The problem is the pilot NOT pulling the chute when required and waiting too long. In most cases, (recent Dallas crash) the pilot knows his engine is running rough, tries to shoot an ILS, blows the ILS and crashes while maneuvering. The stress of trying to perform on instruments, with an engine developing less than normal horsepower, with passengers... Easy to say what should have been done - (level off & pull chute) or what many of us would have done. (try to land plane, avoid insurance claims nightnare and stay off evening news). In retrospect, living and not killing your passengers is always the best choice.

As a Cirrus pilot, I am somewhat confused as to why the designers chose a both a Mooney AND a Saratoga as opposed to a side stick Cirrus/Corvalis design. The primary flight objectives of a flight school are clearly met with the Cessna 172 election, and the high performance end is met with the Mooney OR the Piper, but why not a side stick option for the largest selling single airplane in the world? Yes, at $57,000.00 - a steeply priced addition to one's den, but still represents 1/10 the price of my airplane when new. If the end market is "home use" then the price needs to go down or they need to option this thing for Cirrus/Corvalis owners.
