Turning a Corner with Jury Awards?
from jimklick
wrote 1 year 51 weeks ago
I agree that until the average walking around, voting, citizen recognizes that
giving free money to "poor innocent victims" comes out of their own
pocket, ridiculous monetary awards will keep making lawyers rich.
We have a County in Illinois that is notorious for outragious awards,
so many cases are filed there, looking for the "pot 'o gold".
We also convict a lot of our former Governors, so what does that say about
Illinois?

I recently was honored to receive the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA.
When asked for advice for younger pilots to help them achieve this longevity, I came up with
three rules:
1. When in doubt, don't. If the successful outcome of what you are about to do is
uncertain, stop and think.
2. Don't do nuthin dumb. The most often heard last words are "Hold my beer and watch this".
3, NEVER ever, ever, ever EVER trust a weather forcast. What you see through the
windshield supercedes all previous information.
Fly safe, live long.

Would you please send this column to the Chicago City Council and the
Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau?
We had a lovely airport (Meigs Field) that would take a Cessna Citation,
and allow it to taxi to McCormick Place..
That is, until the previous mayor decided that the city needed another
park, because only the rich few used Meigs, and it didn't pay its own way,
both of which were lies.

I agree with Douglas. I am inside the Class B airspace around O'Hare,
by 1.3 NM, and as a result have a mode C transponder in my Pitts S1S
I may be going to LSA due to medical issues, and am looking for a
Cessna 120 or 140, because $120,000 and up for an LSA is ludicrous.
A friend bought a CubCrafter Cub for more than that, and the other day
I stopped by his hangar. A glass panel in a Cub borders on obscene, and
when he had to check the tach for his flight time, he had to power up the
Master and Avionics Master, and wait while the glass "self tested" before
he could see the tach time.
Another friend has a nicely equipped IFR Cesna Skylane. Look in the
window and you can see what the tach time is.
If I fly "over the horizon", I use the Skylane. Every other flight I have no
need for the "gee whiz" factor, so why should I pay to haul it around?

I can remember back in my CAP days when we would point a Sweitzer 2-33 into the wind and
"fly" it in a 10 knot wind. The controls were just effective enough to keep the wings level,
but sloppy enough that you had to work at it.
Wonder what wind it would take if you could put a 747 on a single point pivot.
