Thousands Furloughed, Construction Projects Halted Due to FAA Shutdown

Why is this story buried in the main stream media? I guess because everyone is so worried about the whole debt ceiling talks. Still, this is not surprising. Congress really sucks right now.
If your congressional representatives are not willing to compromise so we can actually have a functioning country, I say call them and them DON'T VOTE FOR THEM AGAIN!
We have to stop with this partisan bull$hit!
All-Electric Airplane Reaches 153 knots

Hey, let's not rain on the electric parade. I'm sure the first cars had very limited range and were pretty dirty and not "practical". We need to encourage electric development and not have high expectations in the beginning. Besides, there are a lot more constraints for flying vehicles vs. those on the ground and it isn't fair to compare them.
The fact that we actually have some flying prototypes is very encouraging. There is a LOT of research happening right now in the lithium battery world, and when we have the next big break-through, range will suddenly not be a factor for electric vehicles of all types. I'm pretty sure that will happen in our lifetime (assuming a middle-aged person).
Save Santa Monica Airport!

The Santa Monica airport has been around since about 1917. So to the previous poster "cha100"...did you buy your house before then? Otherwise, you knew what you were signing up for by living there. Or did you not think there would be any fumes or noise? You are just another "not-in-my-backyard" complainer, except the airport was there long before your backyard was. If you want clean air and no noise, there's plenty of land left in the mid-west. Go ahead and move there.
There's no doubt that airplanes and jets spew harmful exhaust, but so do the one-hundred thousand cars passing by daily on the 405 and the 10. Maybe you can try to get those freeways closed by scare-tactic law suits too...
At a certain point we have to come together as a society and declare that the benefits to the greater community outweigh the negatives posed to a few. There have already been enough community airports closed in southern California. This is the last airport left on the west side and we should not let ourselves be bullied by short-sighted NIMBY people like this.
Oh, and btw, I live near LAX and despite some drawbacks, I can clearly appreciate that the needs of the city of LA trump my own desire for a perfectly tranquil backyard.
My Friend Peppermint Patty

Thanks Pia for the nice post about your "baby". I'd love to own one myself one day. My grandfather had several V-tail Bonanzas when I was a kid (that's where I got my love for flying) and I always wondered how someone could afford an airplane (especially my grandfather, who had his own business but was by no means well off). Sometimes I think maybe it was just the golden age for GA when gas was cheap and insurance costs low. Now owning an aircraft seems like an un-obtainable luxury, even for someone making a decent salary. I'd love to see an article about how it can be done in this day and age. I know Flying has had articles in the past about buying a used plane, but it seems they never talk about how it could be done for the average middle-income pilot.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your story...I'd love to fly out to Catalina with a dog and mountain bike for the afternoon!
Be Quiet

OMG yes. Instructors reading this take note!
Some of the worst instruction flights I've had were bad because the instructor was non-stop nit-picking and would not shut up. I recently had a flight like that and I almost canceled it before we even started the engine. I stuck it out and did learn a lot, but it was incredibly stressful and NOT the way I want to learn. And when the student makes really minor mistakes -- for example when talking on the radio ("N12345, with you level at 5,000" instead of "N12345, level 5,0000") -- for crying out loud save the critique until we're on the ground! There is enough serious safety issues like altitude and airspeed to worry about without going into minor stylistic phraseology!
I've been training recently with a guy who is quiet like you suggest and occasionally points out mistakes after some time has gone by or if it is time critical. With less of a constant stream of critiques, I can focus more and not make more mistakes. We have a post-flight briefing and that has been the ideal time for him to bring up the more minor nit picks.
