Faking Flight

I posted a response here yesterday, but obviously it got censored :-)
To recap, in short: yep, flight sims are useful tools. As a student-pilot, I saved lots of money by learning procedures, navigation and practicing basic maneuvers in the virtual aircraft.
I've got X Plane 9, pretty good flight model, highly recommended. A yoke, pedals and throttle quad really adds to the fidelity.

So you don't buy an iPad because you don't agree with the politics of Apple? huh? I feel kind of sorry for you, that you are that hung up on such silliness. It must be rough, having to research the political affiliations of all the companies that supply you with your consumer products.
And it must be horrible having to live in Southern California with all of those dang liberals!
You consider iPads to be balky. After having suggested that you've never used one. Interesting. I use mine all the time (sorry, yeah, I'm one of those progressive iPad users), and never had a problem, in flight or on the ground.
For apps, I see alot of you using Foreflight. I like foreflight, great charts, plates, etc, but my personal favorite is WingXPro. I found WingXPro to be superior to Foreflight, wondering how you other users out there might compare/contrast the two apps.
Using the Airspeed Indicator as a Fuel Flow Meter?

I'm just finishing this book now, after having it recommended to me. I'm a student pilot, and this book offered, hands down, the best explanation of AoA that I've seen yet (and I do a LOT of reading).
The other significant (to me) education I rec'd by reading this book was the function and usage of the rudder. The book does a great job of identifying the pitfalls of poor rudder technique at the edges of the envelope. Very useful information.
Highly recommended, at least from the SP perspective!

Seems to me, once a SP has reached the stage where they solo, they're pretty much in for the certificate. But maybe I'm wrong. I'd be interested to see the data on when students tend to drop....2 lessons? 5 lessons? 20 hours? Knowing the "when" would go a long way towards identifying the "why".

I thought VFR on top was an IFR procedure (bear with me, I'm newly certificated PP ) - could you be referring to VFR over the top for VFR flight?
