Save Santa Monica Airport!

Of course, Daley's actions were illegal. Today, the penalties are much higher, but I still wouldn't put it past the PRSMO. Standard tactic: start from false premises to make your point. Such pervasive dishonesty is sad. Unfortunately, time and again, the "airport was here first" argument doesn't work. Perhaps you can have the airport declared an historical landmark - that might actually help! It did for College Park in DC/MD. If you try, I suggest you enlist Barry Schiff's help. Good luck! I love SMO too, in and out of their frequently with Dad when I was a child. --Jim

This certainly was my plan until I actually lost my iPad. Don't ask. On hold until I can afford another one ...
My Friend Peppermint Patty

Is Peppermint Patty a '56? Was that original paint in the photo? If so, it must have had a nice pampered and hangared life. Our 180 is a '56 and came from the factory with a similar paint pattern. The 180 will buck and soar during landings just like you described. I'm sure you remember well the process of becoming one with that spring steel landing gear so that landings became gradually more normal looking. I sure do.
I grew up in our 180 - Dad bought it when I was 4. It was 4 too. So you're going to be prying the keys to my airplane away from my cold dead fingers. I surely do get the part about emotional attachment to your bird.
I hope you find another bird soon!
For the Love of Meigs

Pia, when I was at VNY in the late 1960s is was a *lot* busier than it is now, I'd be interested to hear the stats. I imagine VNY actually could accommodate those additional operations. Can't say whether it could accommodate the additional home-based aircraft, though, and I'm sure many who hangar their aircraft at SMO would be very disappointed if forced to move. Also, I fear that if SMO were closed it would be very quickly gobbled up by real estate interests - shopping centers or whatever would quickly take over. That is very unlike what has happened at Meigs, where the land could still be quickly reconverted back to an airport. This is a great opportunity to put Meigs back in play! Someone needs to get that started. Good luck!
FAA to Charge $150 per Pilot for iPad App Data

Agree with the comment about running afoul of their law about dissemination charges. The study to determine an appropriate fee doesn't have to be extensive or itself expensive, but there needs to be *some* accuracy to it; $150 is a very large number. And how is it defined? The multiple apps question is probably one of many such questions. Gonna be ugly.
This, alas, is a USER FEE. Responding legally, I would probably revert to paper charts. Some might respond with illegal copying. I'll bet a popular response would be to use other charting sources or out-of-date charting. This will impact safety! But all the industry's comments about user fees impacting safety fall on deaf ears.
How are they being measured? By their budget shortfall. They are being given no alternative. The fight will have to go up to chain, to our Congress who hasn't passed a budget in three years. Oh well, it's what we have. Good luck to us all.
