Your analysis really resonated with me. I learned to fly in ultralights and that inspired me to get my private ticket. Now, although I rent Skyhawks and Skylanes, I still keep a former ultralight (now an LSA) for those calm days when all I need is low and slow (and inexpensive).

A Cessna 172 made an emergency landing at our local airport. The pilot had only recently received her licence and was taking her husband for a sightseeing flight. Without warning, a large water bird came in from the side, somehow missed the prop, and completely destroyed the windshield. Despite the wind, noise and bird blood, she made a smooth landing.
What made for a safe outcome was that this pilot was obviously well trained. She remembered to "fly the airplane." She also knew she needed to get on the ground quickly. In addition, she made mental notes all along her route regarding potential emergency landing sites. At the time of the bird strike, she was only a couple of miles from our field.
This pilot's experience went right to the heart of your point. There was no way she could have prevented the strike. When it did happen, however, her training and preparation greatly reduced the risk she might otherwise have faced.

Your comment about the closeness of the practice area is right on. I fly over that beautiful green area north of Lake Apopka very regularly; I was flying in that vicinity just this morning. The fact that it is right next to X04 makes a big difference. Students out of Orlando Executive must add a half hour round trip to each lesson just to go to and from the practice area. Just another benefit of learning at a "country airport" (you may be aware that X04 used to be called Orlando Country Airport).

I learned to fly in ultralights, so from the beginning I appreciated the value of light aircraft. Later I earned my private ticket and flew Cessnas, including the 182. It's a great airplane and, if I ever win the lottery, I may buy one. Until then, however, I will stay affordably current in my LSA.

I couldn't have said it better. When I retired 3 years ago, I bought an almost new Aerolite 103 ultralight for $7,000. It burns 3 gallons of autogas per hour and is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
