The Inevitability of a Red Bull Crash

I haven't ever thought that I'd want to watch one of these, even on TV, and I'll admit to disappointment when I found out that Michael Goulian was a participant. (I've seen him fly aerobatics, and that's a whole other story.)
Common Sense From the FAA

One down, one or more to go. By the time they catch up to me, decades from now, I'll have developed something that really should ground me. (like maybe being 6 feet under?) Meanwhile any number of people with valid medicals are more likely to die.
Lots more medications for them to get more sensible about. I know an old guy with adult ADD who does without the meds so he can fly his airplane. If he still has the money, which I don't know. And for him I think the money would be a lot easier to grab and hold onto if he could take the stuff.
Flying Bicycles

Generally agree and like this column.
However, didn't the Condor count as successful? Wasn't it's structure aluminum with no carbon?
As far as technical progress with bikes, for many many years it's been like making carbon fiber deck chairs for the Titanic. The aerodynamics have not improved significantly in 100 years, and aerodynamics determines how fast bikes go. It's true that today's best bikes are significantly lighter than the best ones 100 years ago, but that's probably less than 10 percent reduction for a 150 lb rider. Of course, this excepts the speed record bikes, but how many of those have you ever seen on the road? OTOH, where I live I can occasionally look up and see a Piaggo Avanti or, much more often, light jets, and sometimes composite light planes. I'll admit that light aircraft are mostly stuck in the 1950's, though that's slowly changing, but bikes are stuck at the turn of the last century. Light planes get glass cockpits and go no faster, bikes get a few ounces lighter and have better brake pads.

You probably already know about these, but you might consider visiting Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in upstate NY. Not sure if you can LAND there with your aircraft, though. Nearby (by air, anyway), Storm King sculpture park might be worth a flyover and some photos. (Not to worry, many of the sculptures are 50 feet tall and should be easily visible.) I'll admit I've only seen it from the ground.
And of course the Air Force Museum, if it's anything like it was 20 years ago (was it really 20 years? ouch!), is well worth visiting.
