I put a Loran in a Cherokee in the 80's and thought it was amazing to have a quasi RNAV ability. It was a big deal to see actual groundspeed! Alas, it was a precursor to GPS which overran and improved on and I say, let it go. Our panels do not have the space for that many backup systems, and gps plus at least one good VOR in case the sunspots come, and I'm happy!
Peter mentions the stick shaker as background....I have to assume that it did not shake on this plane? It certainly would have given them a clue the airline was in a stall.
