Remote Control: Flying a Predator

The current state of the art in flight simulation seems to have been mostly ignored in the design of the flight control system. For fifty bucks, I can buy a copy of Austin Meyer's X-Plane, and experience a remarkable level of control realism, HUD displays, realistic control placement, and intuitive operation and aircraft "feel" - even using a single monitor!
Have a look on YouTube at the multi-monitor simulator stations (some even with MOTION!) that have been built in basements by simming enthusiasts, and it really makes one wonder how myopic government & industry can be, considering their virtually unlimited budgets.

Absolutely awesome Rich. I imagined your narrative spoken in the voice and intonations of Jack Webb. In fact, now that the popular series "Flying Wild Alaska" has come to a close, I smell the incubation of a new aviation based reality show. What shall we call it? How about "Extreme Sink Rate", or maybe "Rich's Excellent Adventure"? I dunno. I'll be watching the Discovery Channel with rapt anticipation!

Dick, your eloquently expressed jet-love never fails to deliver the goods, but this time you waxed so particularly poetic I had to look back at the byline to make sure the ousted Lane Wallace hadn't popped in a submission under the radar. Thanks for weaving such a rich tapestry from the threads of your kerosine-fueled reverie. You live a charmed life my friend, and I appreciate the opportunity to come along now and then for a vicarious ride through wonderland. Keep 'em coming.

Thomas brushes up against the simple answer. Why can't a C152 be classified as an LSA? Some Ercoupes do, and they are often used for LSA training -- remember that lower cost appeals to the FBO as well as the potential owner.
Since the venerable C152's are everywhere, and their weight and performance only slightly exceeds the LSA regulations, why not lobby the FAA to stretch those limits to include the 152 and others like it? Doing so would open up a whole new tier of possibilities for potential recreational pilots on a budget, and the increasing number of baby-boomers (read geezers) for whom flight has long occupied a high ranking on their bucket lists.
