The author assumes the GoogleHUD would be used the same way as a traditional aircraft HUD. I think if we take away this assumption there will be use cases for the GoogleHUD that work without the need to be "boresighted". I also think any head-mounted display would need to let the wearer focus at least as far away as an instrument panel, so the need for collimation isn't as great. I'm not saying it'll be perfect... anyone who's used an iPad on a sunny day knows well the limitations of consumer devices in the cockpit. But I wouldn't rule the GoogleHUD out as a useful tool for pilots. Android's app developers are a pretty clever bunch. And if all else fails, you can still use the HUD to keep passengers amused...
