Air France 447 Crash: Final Report Points to Pilot Error, Confusion

First, I have a bias. I used to work for Boeing, but not in design or flight standards; I was a lowly computer programmer/analyst.
I fail to understand the European design philosophy in this case. When two or three pitots do not agree, why not extrapolate an air speed factor from the GPS? In other words, store the latest ground speed and also the latest difference in ground speed and air speed, both of which are (or were recently) available, and, upon pitot failure, use the last figures to generate an artificial air speed figure to allow the plane to continue on course, and not close down as if they were landed. At the same time there should be a buzzer warning to the pilots that they're not on pitots any more, but a generated air speed. This is how I would design the system.

Recent Univ. of Maine graduates with promising careers in their respective fields. One man was from Brazil. Accident happened at dusk or after dark; pilot did not have a lot of experience. Runway lights were lit; possibly use of landing lights might have made plane more visible.

Definitely not a do-it-yourselfer! Great professional work, fellows. FAA will appreciate; I used to work for them, not in flight ops, but, rather, as a lowly computer programmer. Our 360 in Washington sent out the NOTAMS to the whole country in those days.

Working for FAA in Washington; I had a great compliment from a major, a retired AF flight instructor and federal traffic controller who had worked Indianapolis Center, who recommended flight instruction for me; I didn't pursue because of unbalanced/weak eye condition. This would have made me ineligible for a commercial license, which pays money, necessary today for gas prices. Younger, I was ready to go, but as I get older I realize that these things are dangerous! Too many relatively wealthy pilots are treating them like automobiles; however, it's a full-time job. I still drive like a pilot; they haven't caught me yet!
