The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators’ (SAFE) Pilot Proficiency Project, which the organization has offered at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, Florida, for the past few years, has become such a success that SAFE has decided to offer the training at other locations around the country.
SAFE President Doug Stewart said the organization plans to offer quarterly weekend-long seminars, which will include training in a Redbird FMX simulator. The first event will take place on October 26 and 27 at the Redbird Skyport in San Marcos, Texas.
The simulator portion of the Pilot Proficiency Project includes 11 different lessons designed to build decision-making and stick and rudder skills. Scenarios include a short-field approach and landing, a night takeoff and landing and a flight from VMC into IMC, just to name a few.
The cost for the program has not yet been set, Stewart said, but he vows that it will be affordable. In addition to qualifying for FAA Wings credit, completion of the Pilot Proficiency Project provides discounts and accident forgiveness, which means that insurance rates won’t go up in most cases when an accident occurs, with Starr Aviation Agency’s insurance program. Completion of the Pilot Proficiency Project in some cases also waives the deductible when non-intentional damage occurs to an airplane. Starr Aviation offers the same training incentives to pilots who complete other proficiency programs, such as those offered by type clubs.
