Video: Dramatic Bird Strike Shatters Windshield

Violent collision caught on camera.

Pilot Rob Weber of Fort Myers, Florida, says he always wondered what it would be like to have a bird strike take out the windshield of his airplane. Now he knows. And he got it on video.

Weber was piloting his Piper Saratoga last week when a direct hit by a bird shattered the left side of his windshield and sent fragments of plastic flying. Despite suffering bloody cuts to his face, Weber managed to keep control of the airplane, declare an emergency and make a normal landing back at Page Field, his home base.

Afterward, Weber laughed off the incident with a CBS News reporter, telling viewers bird strikes in South Florida are inevitable – although not always this dramatic. He says he hopes to have his windshield replaced quickly so he can get back in the air.
