Search and rescue personnel in Australia are currently looking for a 1934 De Havilland DH84 Dragon 2 with six people on board that went missing on Monday after departing from a vintage air show.
According to local news reports, the aircraft – which is cleared to fly only in VFR conditions – issued a distress call that was picked up by another local airplane at around 1:00 p.m. in which 68-year-old pilot Des Porter said he needed assistance positioning himself.
The biplane’s emergency beacon activated around 1:30 p.m., but ceased a short time afterward.
The De Havilland Dragon had reportedly headed south toward its intended destination of Caboolture Airport after departing the fly-in in the northern town of Monto around 11 a.m.
Search and rescue efforts, which have been thwarted by ongoing poor weather and rugged terrain, have so far not resulted in the location of the aircraft. On Tuesday more than a dozen rescue aircraft were launched in hopes of recovering the missing airplane.
