Pilot Killed in Collision of Finnish Jet Trainers
The Finnish defense force has confirmed one pilot was killed in a collision of two BAE Hawk trainers yesterday over a sparsely populated area in western Finland.
The collision happened just after noon in good weather at about 5,000 feet, the Finnish defense force said in a statement on its website. The pilot of one of the Hawk Mk66 jet trainers was located on the ground about an hour after the collision and taken to a hospital. The pilot of the other airplane, described as an experienced Finnish air force instructor, died.
Three airplanes were involved in the training exercise, which involved a mock dogfight, according to the defense force statement. The third airplane returned to Kauhava air base for a safe landing.
