Richard Bach, Flying alumnus and author of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” among other aviation-themed books, was seriously injured after crashing in his single-engine SeaRey amphibian on Friday near Friday Harbor, Washington, according to news reports.

Bach’s son James Marcus Bach wrote in a blog that his father “hit a power line while landing at a small grass field on San Juan Island.” James’ blog also discussed his father’s focus on risk management. “His risk taking is characterized by plans and backup plans,” he said. “He is a safety-obsessed pilot.”

James told the Associated Press that his father had suffered injuries to his shoulder and head, and that his condition was considered serious, but that he was improving. James tweeted on Tuesday, “Well folks, it’s going to be a long haul with dad. I thought he was lucid, but he’s really not.”

May God bless and heal Dick Bach in his hour of need.

His writing drew m e to FLYING back in the 1960s, as a youngster. His Jonathan Livingston Seagull made me cry for the joy of flight, and one gull's search for independence and flying for the sheer joy of it. Without that book, and all his fine writings in FLYING, I'm certain I'd never have paid for that $5 familiarization flight back in 1974, which ultimately led to private, seaplane, commercial, and multi-engine-IFR ratings. Let us all hope he makes a full recovery. And for cryin' out loud, somebody takes that f%#king powerline down!

Anyone who hasn't read "Stranger to the Ground" has missed one of aviations great works of non-fiction. I loaned my copy to an older RF-84F pilot andhe said it all rang true.
