On page 47 of current Mar`10 issue, the CJ4 clearly has an older-style "long-wire" antenna.What is this ant. for,in modern era of avionics?

The long wire antenna is for the HF radio. HF antennas must be much longer that for VHF. Sometimes an HF antenna can be hidden behind a fairing or other non conductive part of the airplane, but a long wire is still common.
