A few weeks ago, Neil Glazer from Pilot Mall invited me to tag along on a fly-in trip to the Bahamas in his Mooney Ovation. The annual trip is put on by the Bahamas Tourist Office as a way to educate American pilots about the processes involved in the quick international journey and about everything the islands have to offer. Needless to say, I was happy to make the trip.

Neil picked a fellow passenger and me up last Thursday at Orlando Executive, where we began the short hop over to Fort Lauderdale to meet the rest of the group – a group made up of everything from twin engine aircraft pilots to a couple of guys making the trip in a Breezer LSA. After topping off the tanks and attending our flight briefing, we ventured out over the open waters and into international territory, a first for me in a private aircraft.

The flight lasted all of 30 minutes, during which my initial concerns about flying over open water in a single-engine airplane quickly dissipated as I realized we would never be too far from land.

We came in to Grand Bahama International Airport on a long straight final, and as we landed, I got my first taste of the warmth of the Bahamian people as airport personnel came to greet us with wide smiles and friendly welcomes.

Getting through customs was a breeze, and after a quick tour of the island and some tasty Grouper, we were back at the airport. Our stay on the second most populated island in the Bahamas was brief, but the main point of the trip was to take advantage of one of the greatest benefits we enjoy as pilots – the opportunity to travel to remote areas often unreachable were it not for GA aircraft.

Our second destination, Great Harbour Key, fit that bill perfectly. A 7 ½ mile island with a population of less than 1,000, Great Harbour Key had its heyday in the 1960s, when it became a favored vacation spot for the likes of Cary Grant, Brigitte Bardot and other Hollywood A-listers. Today its exudes a laid-back feel, with its wide expanses of pristine beaches and a waterfront grill right off the airport that boasts some of the most famous hamburgers in the region.

We left Grand Bahama in a light drizzle – the only poor weather of the trip – but were able to make the short flight to Great Harbour Key, located a little over 60 nautical miles to the south, in VFR conditions.

After a night on the island, we headed to the region of Exuma, which offers some of the most spectacular views from the sky I have ever seen. We flew in low in order to better enjoy the view along the way, and as we hugged the various uninhabited islands stretched along our flight path, we watched the water turn from bright shades of royal blue to the most incredibly vibrant hues of teal. A testament to its beauty, Exuma has been the set for some major Hollywood blockbusters, including the Pirates of the Caribbean series as well as the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball. Despite its popularity on the big screen, however, the area remains a remote string of islands replete with open skies that make for an easy flight with little competing traffic. Exuma International Airport’s new full service FBO, known as Odyssey Aviation and opened in February of this year, makes the spot an even more compelling destination for GA pilots.

Of all the islands, Exuma provides some of the most spectacular accommodations in the Bahamas. For those looking for a five-star resort experience, the Grand Isle Resort and Spa provides world-class beachfront villas. Those on a tighter budget can still find plenty of great hotels, as well as plenty of fun excursions on the island. One of the best low-cost experiences is a beachfront bar and grill appropriately titled Chat and Chill, where visitors can stand knee-deep in the water with pieces of conch meat and watch as stingrays approach to gently eat on the scraps.

After swimming with the stingrays, we hopped in the Mooney on Saturday morning amidst blue skies, departed Exuma and journeyed over to the island of San Salvador, where many believe Christopher Columbus first discovered the New World during his 1492 voyage. While the island’s airport is never too busy, pilots looking for both a good view of the beaches and some occasional airplane watching can find both in an affordable waterfront hotel just a few steps away. Visitors can also take advantage of San Salvador’s first-rate fishing and scuba diving opportunities, known as some of the best in the region.

In preparation for our return to Florida on Sunday, Neil made a quick heads-up call from the airport to the customs office at Fort Pierce, where we would arrive in just a few hours. After paying San Salvador’s custom office the $25 per person departure tax, one of the cheapest around, we were off.

As we approached Fort Pierce, we bid adieu to the peaceful emptiness of the Bahamian skies and were ushered into the busy hustle and bustle of South Florida airspace.

I returned to the States with a newfound appreciation of the Bahamas – one that can’t be gained by visiting the islands via the regular tourist route – as well as some new flying friends. For any other relatively new pilot looking for a fun adventure to stretch his flying skills, or any veteran pilot simply looking for an amazing low-hassle destination, I’d recommend giving the Bahamas a try.

Sorry Bethany,

I think your "...quickly dissipated...never be too far from land." statement is incredibly naive.
If you are flying a single-engine airplane over anything you can't land ON you are too far from LAND. You would not be the first to drown within sight of it !!!

I disagree with you, flyingbob. On my first trip to the Bahamas in my 172 I worried about the over water flying. I quickly realized the real challenge of an engine failure would be picking the best yacht to ditch beside.

With the proper equipment (vests/rafts) and some forethought on how to use them, flying a single engine to the Bahamas is a risk well worth taking.

I presume your 172 comes with "stiff legs". So let's say you ditch on the ocean under the best possible circumstances: flat calm seas, no wind and the yacht you chose is exactly where you want it. Do you really think you will remain upright after "touchdown" ? Or, will you FLIP end-over-end because your gear just happens to dig in ?

DON'T FOOL YOURSELF and risk the lives of your pax !!! Vests and rafts are NOT going to save you if you can't exit an inverted and quite likely deformed airframe. Cracking both doors may help if the wings don't fold up against them. I put you chances at 50% at BEST and that's only if EVERYBODY is strapped in a 4-pt restraint. Happy landings...

Do your homework. 82% of all blue water ditchings are survivable. That includes a lot of airplanes that ditched and were unprepared, and large airplanes for which the survival rate is a lot worse. I'm sure virtually none of passengers had 4-point harnesses. Statistics show the survival rate for high wing aircraft is slightly better than low wing aircraft due their lower touch down speeds. (Source: NTSB) And finally, high wing aircraft do not FLIP - they nose over. Wings "fold up" on ditching in a GA airplane??? Name one instance.

The stats I've read agree with that 82% number, and it's over 90% if you include rivers and lakes.

But, the stats also showed no support for theories about low vs high wing, or retract vs fixed gear - mostly because there isn't enough data for meaningful analysis. Certainly, there's no "smoking gun" favoring retracts or low wings.

Touchdown speed is clearly important (high vs low wing does not affect this!). This may be one reason why fixed gear, while "obviously" worse, is not worse in practice: retractable-gear airplanes tend to have higher stalling speeds, so the touchdown speeds are higher, and that's a very big deal. Curiously, on very smooth water the fixed gear can hydroplane, allowing the fuselage to settle into the water at a very much lower speed.

Fixed-gear airplanes don't appear to flip on touchdown. There's rarely any mention of it in the accident reports, and since it's a significant event it would presumably get mentioned. The few videos there are of fixed-gear ditchings show very sharp decelerations, nose down, followed by the aircraft settling upright (although nose-low). Low wing aircraft sit "on" the water for a short time, while high-wing aircraft sink up to the wing roots pretty well immediately.

The other factors that are important, by the way, are sea state (waves make it tough), survival gear (you need to be wearing the lifejacket already, and there may - or may not - be time to get a raft out), and water temperature (if you have a lifejacket, you're not going to drown, but outside tropical waters you may die of hypothermia within hours, or less - especially if you don't get the raft out). Of course, en route to the Bahamas, impact and drowning are the bigger concerns.

The great debate about flying over water in a single has existed and will exist for a long time. I have worked professionally in corporate aviation for 30 years and have a conservative, safety first approach to everything I do around aircraft. Because of this, I have thought about this subject off and on for most of those years. The one thought that supports flying over water for me is looking at the many areas of the country that I have flown over without ever considering it. Over the center of any big city or highly populated suburban area, over a mountainous region, over a densely forested track of land or any multitude of other topographical features could make a forced landing more hazardous that water. If you use your aircraft for travelling at all you will occasionally be in a hazardous region that will make a successful forced landing very difficult. Many times, this region could extend for hundreds of miles such as the state of Maine or Pennsylvania or the Rockies. So it really comes down to the question, do you want to use a single engine aircraft for travel or do you always want to be in a position for a “safe” off-airport landing.
After making this decision for myself, I vowed to make my single engine as reliable as possible. I am an A&P so I don’t have to pay for labor but essentially I do an annual inspection on my engine compartment at every oil change. I sometimes replace components before they fail or wear out. I have an engine analyzer that looks at each cylinder. I preheat in the winter and most importantly I try to fly at least once per week. The way I look at it, the money I save by flying a single versus twin allows me to spend as much money as I need on my single engine to keep it reliable.
