FBO Spotlight: Gaylord Regional

Flying reader Mike Woods' take on why this Michigan FBO is top-notch.

Gaylord Regional (KGLR)
Gaylord, Michigan

In our FBO Spotlight series, we’re highlighting FBOs around the country that have received rave reviews from our readers. This Spotlight is brought to you by Beechcraft Baron pilot Mike Woods, who has more than a few good things to say about the service provided by Gaylord Regional (KGLR), in Gaylord, Michigan.

I recently had a business trip to Gaylord, Michigan (GLR) and flew in with a Beechcraft Baron. In the past the FBO did not have crew cars so I did not call to reserve one. However, in the last year they added two of the them for their customers. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived there, both had been reserved.

They were extremely apologetic for not having a car for me, but they insisted that they give me a ride to my customer, and told me to call to be picked up when I was done. Since it was a nice warm day and I needed exercise, I decided to walk back when I had finished my business. Before I could get back to the airport, another woman in a pickup truck with little kids in tow stopped and told me to hop in since she thought it was too warm to be walking. I was already at the airport entrance so I thanked her for her kind offer and walked into the airport. They half scolded me for not calling for the ride back.

I had left my partner at the FBO so he could do some computer work and when I returned, he said Shari, our fantastic FBO hostess, told him they have free sandwiches for people flying in. Before we could eat, Shari had put ice cubes in a glass and served us cold drinks with our sandwiches. They absolutely refused any money for anything. The small town welcoming attitude was shown to be in abundance not only by the FBO, but the local people as well.

They have a beautiful new terminal building with meeting rooms, pool table, flight planning, and even a bed for crew resting. Great place for golfers too.

Needless to say, we topped the tanks and will go out of our way to stop at Gaylord, Michigan, whenever we can. They have a both GPS and ILS approaches with two runways, 6,500’ and 3,300’.

I have come across many good FBOs over the years, and some not so good, but Gaylord Regional is above and beyond. Their hospitality is the best I have ever experienced.
