Embry-Riddle Reaches Highest Level Accreditation with New Ph.D.

Aviation school introduces Ph.D. in Human Factors.

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida, has achieved the highest level of accreditation in the area with the introduction of a new degree program — Ph.D. in Human Factors. The university claims the degree makes it the only school in the country to offer a full range of degrees in Human Factors: a bachelor of science, a master’s and a Ph.D.

Regional accreditation for the southern states is done under the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), one of seven regional accreditation associations in the country, which requires universities to offer four or more doctorate programs to qualify for the highest level of accreditation. ERAU also offers Ph.D. programs in Aviation, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics and Mechanical Engineering.

“With our new accreditation status comes increased responsibility to enhance scholarly activity and research productivity,” said Embry-Riddle’s president, Dr. John P. Johnson. “This is a path we have been following for many years.”

The Ph.D in Human Factors is available for students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in human factors, psychology or a closely related field. While aviation is at the heart of the school, some of the 11 doctoral students currently enrolled are directing their studies in non-aviation related fields, such as game-based learning and healthcare human factors.
