Big improvement, huh? Not. Daley came in like a thief in the night and destroyed a Chicagoland icon that was known around the world in large part due to Microsoft FS and associated with my hometown Chicago. And what did he get in the end? Not even a hand slap. Turns my stomach to see this picture. He wanted to leave a major landmark change as his legacy. The only legacy he left was the one that Illinois pols have been associated with for as long as historians have taken notice - he was a crooked SOB.
Daley should have been jailed for this dangerous and foolish act. Why, oh why do Americans insist on electing fools to high public offices.
Daley was a monarch and a bastard prince. He was given total power by the stupid voters of Chicago and the city is suffering because of him. The Meigs closing can be reversed however if enough pilots and aviation fans exert pressure on the real powers in Chicago. Those powers are the many corporations that used the field and will again.
Sad, but real if we let it happen - This can be marked as the beginning of the push of GA out of the american way of life. Allowing 140+ towers to be closed is another milestone. If we as pilots and GA enthusiasts don't stand up, educate the general public, and put our hearts, voices, and dollars into revitalizing GA our country could become like most all others - the only flying is government sanctioned with a specific business purpose and the fees that go with that. I teach Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and Korean students every day who are here training because their countries do not have general aviation. More laws, more restrictions, more government control, less freedom. GA is another part of our country where we seem to be willing to let go of (unwilling to fight for) or freedoms. I remember a famous movie line "I'm mad as He.. and I'm not going to take it anymore!" - I think it's time for us to go there....
