**Amateur video taken of the crash sequence appears to show the 777 striking the seawall at the approach end of Runway 28 and then clearly spinning 180 degrees in midair before landing again on its belly, a sequence that very probably resulted in the saving of countless lives, compared to if the airplane had landed on its back and made deploying the emergency slides far more difficult or impossible. ** NTSB

**The fuselage was largely intact, though the tail broke off, apparently after hitting the seawall as the airliner hit around 1,300 feet short of the normal landing spot for the 777. Debris was scattered far and wide, including an engine that was ripped from the wing and wound up many yards away from the rest of the wreckage. **

**An investigator examines the tail section of the Boeing 777, which came to rest more than 100 feet from the beginning of the runway and more than 1,000 feet before the usual landing zone. Based on video footage of the crash, it appears likely that the tail was torn off when the rear of the airplane struck the seawall at the approach end of Runway 28, sending the airliner out of control and careening down the runway. ** NTSB
