Recently released surveillance video gives a closer glimpse into the final moments of a former SkyWest pilot who stole a Canadair CRJ200 in July before crashing the airplane on the tarmac and shooting himself.
Forty-year-old Brian Hedglin — who was suspected in the killing of his girlfriend a week prior — reportedly scaled the gate at St. George Municipal Airport on July 17 before boarding the unlocked airplane. He then proceeded to start the engines, and erratically sped over speed bumps and crashed into more than a dozen cars in a parking lot before clipping the airport terminal building with the jet’s left wing, rendering the airplane unflyable.
The SkyWest pilot — who was on administrative leave at the time of the incident — committed suicide inside the airplane, with the engines still running.
SkyWest is a regional airliner that operates flights for a variety of national carriers, including Delta, United Airlines and US Airways.
