Have you always dreamed of being an astronaut? If so, it might be time to update your resume.
NASA announced it is accepting applications for its next class of astronaut candidates from December 14 through mid-February, as the organization begins plans for deep-space missions.
An announcement released by NASA states that candidates with diverse backgrounds, from pilots and engineers to scientists and doctors, will be considered for their next class of astronauts.
While it’s a highly competitive job, the requirements are not as steep as you might think. In addition to passing the NASA space physical and meeting the height requirement, candidates for pilot or commander positions require a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics and at least 1,000 pilot-in-command hours in jet aircraft. An advanced degree and test pilot experience are desirable, but not required. Applicants for other mission specialist positions require the same educational and physical requirements, along with either three years professional experience or an advanced degree.
“This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realize the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “Those selected for this service will fly on U.S. made spacecraft from American soil, advance critical science and research aboard the International Space Station, and help push the boundaries of technology in the proving ground of deep space.”
