Mayor of Charlotte Tapped as Next DOT Secretary

White House taps rising Democratic star Anthony Foxx.

Anthony Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been selected to serve as the new head of the Department of Transportation, replacing Ray LaHood.

The Obama Administration praised Foxx’s efforts to improve Charlotte’s transit infrastructure and bring a modern electric tram service to the city. Foxx received strong marks for his city’s handling of the Democratic National Convention last summer.

LaHood had planned on leaving his post early in Obama’s second term, but budget battles in Washington kept him on the job longer than anticipated. LaHood is expected to stay on until Foxx is confirmed by the Senate.

Foxx was elected mayor of Charlotte in 2009 and re-elected in 2011. He also served on the Charlotte City Council from 2005 to 2009.
