Cirrus to Skip Sun ‘n Fun

Cirrus Aircraft has told Flying that it won’t be at next week’s Sun ‘n Fun fly-in in Lakeland, Florida. The company knows that the decision will prompt rumors, and it’s  right. We’ve already started hearing them. Any time a major single-engine airplane manufacturer skips one of the country’s major airshows, the result is often suspicion that the company is experiencing economic hardship.

But Cirrus says it just ain’t so. In a phone call to Flying, Cirrus’ Todd Simmons said that the reason for the decision is that Sun ‘n Fun is an expensive show to attend and that Cirrus thinks its sales goals can be better served by meeting customers at different kinds of events more specifically targeted to Cirrus customers.

To further dispel concerns Simmons went on to say that in addition to the big trade shows, including Oshkosh, AOPA Summit and Aero Friedrichshafen, Cirrus will conduct numerous company sales events. “Taken altogether,” he says, Cirrus will actually have more events scheduled in 2012 than in any year in recent memory.  Simmons also pointed out that Cirrus will be sponsoring several events at Sun ‘n Fun. He concluded by noting that if a potential customer were interested in talking with a Cirrus sales rep in Florida at Sun ‘n Fun time, it wouldn’t be hard to scare one up.

Fellows, this piece is notable for the info left out of the article and misleading by it's glaring omission of facts and reported circumstancs IN THIS VERY magazine bck in November of 2011 and February of 2012, to wit: 3Q sales were up and Cirrus Aircraft said it delivered more airplanes in the fourth quarter of 2011 than any since 2008; its strongest performance of the last 12 quarters and a reason for optimism heading into 2012. Also, no mention of the new five seat SR22option, future plans for a turbine engine and the fact that the Cirrus Jet is still on track.

Why the author of this piece neglected to bring this news to the reader is beyond me but belies a "yellow journalism" and cynicism not expected from Flying Magazine (at least not since you fired that hack, McClellan...). Is it that Flying Magazine desires "gossip" of a failing Cirrus?

So Cirrus skipped Sun n Fun? So what? I met some of the sales crew at Oshkosh a few years ago. We were staying st the same resort contemporaneous with a Lawyer Pilots Bar Association meeting. I was no longer "in the market" having secured a 2007 SR22T, but they were professional, and courteous and selling airplanes. No matter how one cuts it, S&F is NOT Oshkosh and simply does not attract a Cirrus customer base sufficient to warrant the expense. I agree. You can't sell Ferraris at a county fair, unless Ferrari makes one hell of a corn tractor!

Advise - stop stirring up the poop and report the GOOD news coming from Duluth and Woodstock, CT (FlightDesign's C4) (I represent the company's US acccident and incident investigations - shameless plug) and rejoice in the fact that airplanes are selling again.
