Long known internally-and increasingly externally-simply as 'The Jet,' Cirrus' single-engine turbofan now has an official name. The Cirrus Vision SJ50 harks back to one of Alan and Dale Klapmeiers' first products, the mid-engine, rear prop-driven ST50. First conceived as a kitplane, the ST50 never went to production, but formed a backdrop for Cirrus's highly successful line of SR20 and SR22 composite singles. Now the turbofan-powered SJ50 is making its bid to become the ultimate personal aircraft, with projected cruise speed of 300 ktas and hoped-for range of 1,000 nm. Cirrus Chairman and CEO Alan Klapmeier said the Cirrus Vision SJ50 "holds the unique promise of redefining general aviation."
