AOPA to Kick Off Regional Fly-In Season in Salinas

Weekend event includes new attractions.

AOPA is launching its regional fly-in season this weekend at the Salinas Municipal Airport on the central California coast. This year’s inaugural event will include several new attractions and is expected to be well attended. The kick-off Barnstormers Party on Friday night, which will include a barbecue, bonfire and a screening of a new movie called “Living in the Age of Airplanes,” has been sold out.

Bright and early at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, the event will open up with a “Rusty Pilots Breakfast Seminar,” designed to help pilots who have been grounded for a while get back in the cockpit. Attendees will be qualified to get a signoff for the ground portion of the biennial flight review.

The main AOPA Fly-In event will open its doors at 8:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, and the exhibits will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to a long list of exhibitors, seminars, product showcases and safety briefings, the Salinas event will include a short aerobatic show and flights in the historic Ford Tri-Motor. AOPA’s president Mark Baker will hold a townhall meeting at 2:45 p.m. and you don’t want to miss Sporty’s ice cream social.

If Salinas is too far away, you will have ample opportunity to attend one of AOPA’s regional events closer to you. The next fly-in will take place on the east coast at AOPA headquarters in Frederick, Maryland, on June 5 and 6. Events will also be held later in the year in Minneapolis; Colorado Springs; and Tullahoma, Tennessee.
