Grypmat Keeps Tools in Place

Sticky, flexible material keeps components organized.

It is of particular importance for airplane mechanics to know where their tools are, not only because they are expensive, but also because a lost tool or other component can become a major flight hazard. Grypmat is a sticky mat that holds tools, screws, nuts and bolts in place so that you always know where they are.

Grypmat comes from Grypshon Industries, founded in 2013 by former F-16 mechanic Tom Burden.

The mat is made from a sticky, flexible material that does not scratch painted surfaces. The polymer-silicone rubber material is nonmagnetic, has anti-static properties and is resistant to chemicals. Grease, dust or dirt from components and tools are easy to wipe off, Burden said.

He said Grypmat’s sticky properties allow it to keep tools in place at angles as sharp as 70 degrees.

“Working as a mechanic in the United States Air Force, I grew increasingly tired of not having my tools within easy reach when working on top of the aircraft,” said Burden. “Tool loss and missing hardware was a constant problem, and I nearly fell off the plane chasing a sliding tool! I invented the Grypmat to prevent these issues and to make it truly easy to keep tools and hardware within comfortable reach so you can just focus on the work in front of you.”

Grypmat is available for $59.95. Additional sizes of the Grypmat can be preordered until February 3 through a Kickstarter campaign, which can be accessed through the website.
