Redline Aviation has developed a new towbar that locks into the axle of the nosewheel on Beech airplanes instead of connecting to the towing pins on the landing gear. The Redline towbar uses a wedge locking system to positively connect the towbar to the nosewheel with just a turn of the locking screw handle. Once engaged, the towbar can't slip off like a bar designed to fit over the tow pins can.
Beechcrafts have long used frangible pins on either side of the nose gear to connect a towbar. The pins are designed to snap before the nose gear is damaged if turned too sharply while towing. This is a wonderful feature for use with tugs and other heavy duty towing equipment, but connecting to the pins is not convenient for a towbar used primarily for hand pulling and steering.
The Redline towbar is made from sturdy steel, can be collapsed into two parts by pulling a pin and is relatively lightweight for carrying in the airplane. An optional connector for a small tug is available. The Redline towbar fits Bonanzas, Barons and Travel Airs, while another model has been developed for retractable-gear Piper singles, including the Malibu. The list price is $280.
