Russell Munson has assembled his photographs of flying over Route 66 in a 40-minute DVD titled Flying Route 66: A Sky Bum's Tour of the Mother Road. Russ took the pictures from his Piper Super Cub during a number of flights over the length of the most famous highway in the country. He used cameras mounted on the Cub's wing struts to show the airplane in flight over the United States, along with more traditional air-to-ground shots.
However, this is not a traditional aviation production. Russ's narration of the images is "new age" and very introspective. If an artsy shot of the ceiling of a motel room in Tucumcari, New Mexico, that lingers on the screen for some time while Russ discusses his boyhood dreams of flying doesn't intrigue you, this DVD probably isn't for you. But if you can share in the passion for low and slow flying of one of aviation's great photographers, you'll probably enjoy the intensity of feeling Russ pours into the work. Perhaps the best part of the Flying Route 66 is a section devoted to the Piper Cub. Russ provides a detailed history of the Cub, along with spectacular photos. Another section is a gallery of Russ's photos of airplanes and aerial shots of intricate features of the terrain.
The DVD sells for $29.99 and is available through Sporty's Pilot Shop at 800/LIFT-OFF, 513/735-9000, or visit www.sportys.com.
