UPS Aviation Technologies has unveiled its new CNX80 multifunction navigator. The box, already certified and expected to be in dealers' hands by the time you read this, is the first panel-mounted wide area augmentation system (WAAS) navigation system approved by the FAA. UPS-AT is shooting for the CNX80, with its 15-channel satellite receiver, to be the first WAAS navigator approved for primary means navigation for all phases of flight, including approach, a capability the FAA is close to launching.
Eventually, WAAS is expected to deliver precision approach capabilities, potentially to Category I minimums. WAAS receivers are required to refresh satellite information five times per second, five times the rate of straight GPS receivers.
The CNX80 is an "all-in-one" box that includes a feature-laden 760-channel VHF communications transceiver and a nav receiver that automatically decodes the station's Morse-code identifier. The bright, sunlight readable 256-color liquid crystal display measures 3.8 inches diagonally. When connected to an optional, remotely mounted UPS transponder, the CNX80 also provides control for that equipment.
The CNX80's database features standard terminal arrival procedures (STARS) and departure procedures (DPs). It also has airway planning, a first for a navigator in this class. Using airway planning for a flight that included going from JFK to KCRE (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) via Victor 1, the pilot would simply enter JFK, V1, CRE and KCRE, and the CRX80 would plot all the intermediate points on the route, a nice feature for pilots who regularly flight plan airway-based routes.
When coupled to an autopilot that accepts roll steering commands, the navigator provides lateral guidance on all procedures, including holding patterns and procedure turns.
