Garmin has introduced a value-priced Mode-S transponder, the GTX 330, and the market looks ripe for it. With requirements looming in Europe for Mode-S transponder equipage for IFR flights in 2003 and VFR flights in 2005, operators there will need a Mode-S box. At $4,995, the GTX 330, Garmin believes, will be a cost-effective option. In the United States, Mode-S will enable traffic information services (TIS), a traffic advisory utility that depends on Mode-S, and it may become a part of the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system now under development.
