Garmin Offers Path to Low-Cost ADS-B Compliance

GDL 82 ADS-B Out unit incorporates with existing transponders.

Garmin has introduced a low-cost ADS-B Out unit designed to help light airplane owners comply with the mandate that is coming up in January of 2020. The GDL 82 incorporates with most existing Mode C transponders, mounting in between the transponder unit and the antenna for a quick and cost effective installation.

The GDL 82 includes a WAAS GPS receiver, providing full ADS-B compliance. However, if you need to fly in the flight levels, this unit is not for you. The GDL 82 is a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) that works on the 978 MHz frequency and will only work below 18,000 feet.

The GDL 82 is expected to be available by the end of the year for $1,795, making it one of the least expensive paths to ADS-B compliance yet. Installation is expected to be economical, too, since there is no panel modification or antenna installation required. Even though the unit won’t be available by the time the $500 FAA ADS-B rebate program is expected to expire in September, an application can be sent in for the rebate now making the installation even more cost effective.
