Why Risk It

Published: Apr 05, 2005

Why risk it. I am sure we have all heard that from people who think flying is nuts. Well i thought about this and this is what i came up with. We face risks like engine failure, weather, possible structural failure, and anything else you could throw out there. Yet we fly. The reson we do this is we love it. Also when we fly we are willing to take a small risk and also have some level of comfort that we know what to do in some emergancies. Sometimes there ape people out there that will do somthing foolish like overload a plane, load a plane so it has bad C.G., or fly with contaminated fuel. This leads to an important conclution. The majority of risks we take are manigable or avoidable risks.

Flying is not "inherently safe", true. We, as pilots, engineers, mechanics, assembly and inspection personnel, instructors, atc personnel, and even the government all come into play to make it "safer". Everyone doing their part all come into play to make what we do as safe as practicable (there's that word often used by the FAA).

The only way one can ever be safe in life is by staying in one safe, guarded place, and never venture out. Even then, there are no guarantees.

Why do we do it? Well.... I addressed this in a post elsewhere on this board, but suffice to say that it can be summed up into exhiliration, beauty, challenge, sense of accomplishment, and ... well... I'm now realizing I could go on and on... but you get the idea... flying is there... so we do it
